Many people think only of the days without food when they think of fasting. But the end is just as important. After fasting, the body first has to get used to solid food again. Here you find out how breaking a fast works, what is on the plate during the rebuilding days and how to make the good time last.

At a glance
  • Traditionally the fast is broken with an apple, eaten slowly and mindfully.
  • A common rule of thumb: about a third as many rebuilding days as fasting days, at least two.
  • During the rebuilding days: small portions, light food, chew well.

Breaking the fast

In Buchinger fasting the fast is traditionally broken with an apple, raw or steamed. You eat it slowly, bite by bite. Many find this moment surprisingly intense, because taste is much stronger after days without food.

In the evening there is usually a light vegetable soup. The body does not need more on the first day.

The rebuilding days

During the rebuilding days the food gradually becomes richer. A common rule of thumb: about a third as many rebuilding days as fasting days, but at least two. In good houses, rebuilding is part of the programme.

  • Steamed vegetables, potatoes, rice and soups
  • Small portions, eat slowly and chew thoroughly
  • Drink plenty, ideally water and herbal tea
  • Leave out fat, sugar, alcohol and coffee for now
  • Stop when you are full, not when the plate is empty
How you end a fast decides what stays with you.

Typical mistakes

The most common mistake is eating too much too quickly after fasting. This can lead to stomach ache and a feeling of fullness. A second mistake: jumping straight back into a busy everyday life after the cure. If possible, plan one or two quiet days after you get home.

What you take home

After fasting, many guests resolve to eat more slowly, eat more vegetables or drink less alcohol. This works best with small, concrete steps. Ask the house for recipes or a final nutrition consultation.

Frequently asked questions

How long do the rebuilding days last?

A common rule of thumb: about a third of the fasting days, at least two. So after five fasting days, two to three rebuilding days.

Why an apple of all things?

It is a tradition from Buchinger fasting. The apple is light, sweet and makes you eat slowly. Many houses also offer alternatives.

Will I put the weight back on?

Part of the weight lost while fasting is water and comes back quickly. Those who change their habits afterwards have a better chance of keeping some off.
