The Schroth cure is one of the oldest cures in the German-speaking world and closely linked to Oberstaufen in the Allgäu. It is strict but clearly structured. Here you find out how it works, what the Schroth wrap is about and who it suits.
- The Schroth cure alternates between drinking and dry days with very light food.
- Typical is the Schroth wrap, a damp, cold wrap early in the morning.
- It is demanding and belongs under medical supervision.
Where the Schroth cure comes from
The cure goes back to Johann Schroth, who lived in Silesia in the 19th century and discovered the effect of damp wraps on himself. Today it is offered above all in Oberstaufen in the Allgäu, which has made a name for itself as the Schroth cure town.
The four building blocks
The Schroth cure is made up of a few clear elements. How strictly it is carried out depends on the house and the doctor.
- Light, low-fat and low-salt food, for example porridge, vegetables and dry rolls
- Alternating drinking days and dry days, on which you drink only a little
- The Schroth wrap: a damp, cold wrap early in the morning, under which the body warms up
- A rhythm of rest and exercise
Strict but honest: the Schroth cure asks a lot and explains every step.
Duration and how it feels
Classic Schroth cures last two to three weeks; many houses also offer shorter versions from one week. The dry days and the wraps are demanding, especially at the start. Traditionally there was also wine on drinking days; today juice or tea is often served.
Who it suits
The Schroth cure is meant for healthy adults who want an intensive cure. It is not suitable with cardiovascular disease, kidney problems, during pregnancy or with eating disorders. A doctor should check beforehand whether it suits you and accompany you during the cure.
Frequently asked questions
