The abdominal treatment is one of the typical parts of a Mayr cure, and for many guests the part they know least about beforehand. Here you find out what happens, how it feels and why Mayr doctors do it.

At a glance
  • The Mayr doctor does the treatment by hand while you lie relaxed on your back.
  • It is repeated several times during the cure and combined with breathing.
  • The doctor decides beforehand whether it is suitable for you.

What the abdominal treatment is

The manual abdominal treatment goes back to the physician Franz Xaver Mayr. The doctor works with gentle pressure and slow hand movements on the abdomen, in time with your breathing. According to Mayr medicine, this is meant to relax the abdomen and stimulate digestion.

The abdominal treatment has been little studied scientifically. Many guests nevertheless find it pleasant and relaxing, especially combined with rest and light food.

How it works

You lie on your back, often with your legs slightly bent. The doctor first feels your abdomen, because in Mayr medicine this is also part of the examination. Then comes the treatment with steady pressure while you breathe deeply into your belly.

  • Duration: usually around fifteen to thirty minutes
  • Frequency: several times during the cure, depending on the house and plan
  • It is done by the Mayr doctor, not by a massage therapist
  • Not straight after a meal, but with some time in between
Calm hands, deep breathing: the abdominal treatment is more gentle than spectacular.

How it feels

Most describe the treatment as pleasant; some spots can feel a little sensitive. If something is uncomfortable, just say so and the pressure is adjusted. Afterwards many feel relaxed and a little tired, so a short rest helps.

When it is not done

The doctor checks beforehand whether the abdominal treatment suits you. During pregnancy, after recent abdominal surgery or with certain conditions it is not done or only in adapted form. So tell the doctor openly about complaints and pre-existing conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Does the abdominal treatment hurt?

Usually not. Some spots can be sensitive. Say so and the pressure will be adjusted.

Do I have to have the abdominal treatment?

No. It is part of the classic Mayr cure, but you can discuss with the doctor whether and how often it makes sense for you.

Can I do the abdominal treatment at home?

The actual treatment is done by the doctor. Some houses do show you breathing exercises or simple self-massage for home.

Luxly does not provide medical advice. Whether a programme suits you is something to discuss with the house's medical team or your own doctor.

Still unsure which house suits you?

Tell the Luxly concierge what you are looking for. It answers honestly, even if that means: no house fits.
