A few days for your health, and maybe your health insurance contributes? In Switzerland it depends a lot on which insurance you have and what kind of stay it is. Here is a clear overview. It does not replace advice from your insurer.
- Basic insurance only contributes to medically prescribed spa cures, with a small amount per day.
- It does not pay for recovery or prevention stays. Supplementary insurance can help here.
- Private health retreats are generally paid by you, but you choose the house and programme freely.
What basic insurance pays
Compulsory basic insurance pays a contribution of 10 francs per day for a medically prescribed spa cure, for at most 21 days a year, in a recognised spa. Medical treatments and prescribed therapies are billed as usual, with deductible and co-payment.
Pure recovery, wellness or prevention in a hotel are not among its benefits.
When supplementary insurance helps
Many supplementary insurance policies contribute to cure or recovery stays, some also to prevention offers. The conditions vary widely.
- Is a doctor's prescription required?
- Does the house have to be on an approved list?
- How much is paid per day and for how many days a year?
- Does the stay need to be approved in advance?
Read your policy first, then book: that way you know what you pay yourself.
Private health retreats
A stay in a health hotel such as the houses on Luxly is generally private. In return you decide when, where and for how long. Check-ups with an overnight stay and fasting or Mayr weeks are usually paid by you; individual medical services may be reimbursed depending on your insurance.
Tax
Medical costs you pay yourself can be deducted from direct federal tax to the extent that they exceed five percent of your net income. A medically prescribed cure can count; pure relaxation cannot. Cantons have their own rules. If in doubt, ask the tax office.
Frequently asked questions
Does health insurance pay for a check-up in a hotel?
Basic insurance usually does not. Some supplementary policies contribute to preventive check-ups. Ask before you book.
What is the difference between a spa cure and a recovery cure?
A spa cure is medically prescribed and takes place in a recognised spa. A recovery cure is mainly for rest and is not paid by basic insurance.
Do I need a prescription for supplementary benefits?
Often yes. Many supplementary insurers require a medical certificate and approval before the stay.
Luxly does not provide medical advice. Whether a programme suits you is something to discuss with the house's medical team or your own doctor.
