Many people like the idea of a health holiday but never quite dare. Too expensive, too strict, too medical, or so it seems. Yet a first stay does not have to be long or hard. Here you find out what a day really looks like, which programme is best to begin with and what to look out for.
- Two to four nights are enough to start; it does not have to be a three-week cure.
- Begin with something gentle: a check-up, a medical spa programme or a short Mayr week.
- You need no skills and no preparation, only to really take the time off.
What really awaits you
A longevity or health hotel is a hotel first: beautiful rooms, good food, a spa. On top comes a programme built around your health. That can be a consultation with a doctor and blood tests, a few treatments, exercise in the fresh air or a light diet.
A typical day starts quietly, often with exercise or an appointment in the morning. You have lunch, then there is time for rest, the spa or a walk. In the evening you go to bed early. Nobody pushes you, and you are not a patient but a guest.
Which programme to start with
Anything that does not overwhelm you is a good start. Three ways have proven themselves:
- A check-up over two to three days: you learn where you stand and eat quite normally
- A medical spa stay: a few medically guided treatments and plenty of rest
- A short Mayr or detox week: light food instead of fasting, with medical guidance
Your first stay does not have to change your life. It is enough if it shows you how much good rest does you.
How long it should be
Two to four nights are enough for a first impression. In that time you notice whether the house and the kind of programme suit you. Many houses offer short programmes for exactly this.
If you feel it does you good, you can stay longer next time. For a Mayr cure or fasting, houses usually recommend a week or more, because the body needs a few days to adjust.
How to prepare
There is little to prepare. More important than any packing list is that you really take the time off. A few things do help:
- Comfortable clothes and good shoes for outdoors
- A book instead of work emails
- Your medication and, if you have them, recent medical reports
- With existing conditions, talk to the house beforehand
- Keep the day of arrival free of appointments
What stays afterwards
The greatest value of a first stay is often not what you experience there but what you take home: a better feeling for your body, a few habits you continue at home, and after a check-up your results in black and white.
Do not plan too much for the days after you return. That way the calm lasts longer.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to fast at a longevity hotel?
No. Fasting is only one of many programmes. In most houses you eat normally or lightly, and you decide which programme you book.
Can I travel alone?
Yes, many guests at health hotels travel alone. You will not be the only one, and the atmosphere is calm and pleasant.
Can my partner come without doing a programme?
In most houses, yes. They simply enjoy the hotel and spa while you do your programme.
What does a first stay cost?
That depends a lot on the house. A long weekend costs far less than a cure over several weeks. You can see current room prices live for every house on Luxly; there is more in the guide “What a cure really costs”.
Luxly does not provide medical advice. Whether a programme suits you is something to discuss with the house's medical team or your own doctor.
