LUXLY GLOSSARY

Gut health

In short

Gut health describes how well your gut digests food, absorbs nutrients and works as a protective barrier. The microbiome plays a big part: trillions of bacteria living in the gut.

The gut is more than a digestive organ. It is closely linked to the immune system and communicates with the brain via nerves and messengers; experts speak of the gut-brain axis. How strongly the microbiome affects mood or weight, for example, is being researched intensively, but much is still open.

The basics are well proven: plenty of fibre from vegetables, pulses and whole grains, as varied a range of plant foods as possible, enough to drink, exercise and enough sleep. Highly processed food and a lot of alcohol, on the other hand, rarely do the gut any good.

At health hotels the gut is often at the centre, especially in Mayr medicine. There it is about relief, slow eating and a manual abdominal treatment by the doctor. Some houses also offer stool or microbiome analyses. The most important effect usually comes afterwards, though: from new habits at home.

Good to know

  • Persistent complaints such as pain, blood in the stool or unwanted weight loss belong with a doctor, not at a wellness hotel.
  • Microbiome tests are fascinating, but what they tell an individual is still limited.
  • Ask who at the house discusses the results with you and what follows from them.

Frequently asked questions

What is the microbiome?

The community of all microorganisms in your gut, mainly bacteria. They help digest fibre and are in close exchange with the immune system.

What helps the gut in everyday life?

Plenty of vegetables, pulses and whole grains, eating slowly and chewing well, enough to drink, exercise and sleep. It sounds simple, but it is the best proven.
